Well, I did stay home from work today, and I had a quiet day, and I did some cleaning, and some shopping, and started a pair of gloves for a coworker, and tomorrow I am back to work again.
May I be optimistic. May I work hard. And may I not find too many things on my plate.
(Also, I am late on a springkink prompt. Oh, the shame.)
---
Variations on the Word "Sleep"
I would like to watch you sleeping, which may not happen. I would like to watch you, sleeping. I would like to sleep with you, to enter your sleep as its smooth dark wave slides over my head
and walk with you through that lucent wavering forest of bluegreen leaves with its watery sun & three moons towards the cave where you must descend, towards your worst fear
I would like to give you the silver branch, the small white flower, the one word that will protect you from the grief at the center of your dream, from the grief at the center. I would like to follow you up the long stairway again & become the boat that would row you back carefully, a flame in two cupped hands to where your body lies beside me, and you enter it as easily as breathing in
I would like to be the air that inhabits you for a moment only. I would like to be that unnoticed & that necessary.
-- Margaret Atwood

Managed to sleep quite reasonably on the flight from Boston to Amsterdam. Had coffee at Amsterdam, so did not sleep on Amsterdam-Manchester flight, but since it was only a short one, no great matter.
Now home safely.
It was a marvellous holiday.
Very grateful to joasakura and archangelbeth. Love you both. Sniff.
Thank goodness I have tomorrow off to recover from jetlag.

Just finished watching.
This does not bode well.
Though in a way it is extremely consistent (and a good way to take) the "lonely god" concept.
And as for the trailer -- well, this does look interesting.
(And it was a very very very good episode.)

The flow bites me again. I put on my DVDs of 大汉天子/ Prince of the Han Dynasty to see how my Chinese is doing, intending to ff through the part I'd seen. But stop to watch the opening sequence of the aged Han Wudi reminiscing about the cronies of his youth-- him and him and him and *especially* Uncle Ming playing WTF Dongfang Shuo/ 东方朔??? ( Explanation )

In a few hours, I will be heading for the airport, to catch the plane, to get back home, to milk the cow, that kicked the dog, that chased the cat, that . . . er, that is, to get back home.
It has been a wonderful and very relaxing holiday.
Sniff.

My computer told me today it couldn't find my profile and rerouted me to generic user XP. I hope this doesn't happen again.)
Was talking about Novik and Temeraire last weekend with nojojojo and paleaswater. Shall continue to do it here. ( Bolstered by some floaty lying awake at 2 am Tuesday morning thoughts, listening to Newark being as silent as Newark ever gets )

Today it's a little rainy and . . . not cold, but sort of chilly. Also I am possibly getting sick. Days like that, I usually feel like making soup, stew, etc.
Here is a proper recipe.
( Here's how I tend to do it. )
I also made cranberry relish with orange zest in, though not for tonight. It's just that they had fresh cranberries today, so why not?
Finally, Coffee Milk Pocky is not bad at all.

Ahoy! I am thrilled about all the fandoms I'm requesting this year, so I am totally EASY. Write me something, I go woot. I dunno
What passes for FAQ hereabouts I like short, I like long, I like crack, I like serious, I like happy fluff and deep thinky realism and woohoo-plot or any combination of the above. Canon canon canon, mad AUs. As long as the characters are recognisable, have it your way.
( Clicky here for OH LOOK TEAL DEER LOOK WAIT WHERE IS THE DEER )
SO, all things said and done, THANK YOU for signing up. Yay!

Er, sorry I've been AWOL or something? Work is distraaacting. I can only take so much peopling at one go before I go lurk sulkily on the internets like a sulky lurking thing. Blargh. Work has involved peopling, therefore I spend most of my time lurking. And DISAPPROVING. Because I can.
What I have been doing, in short, macro-form. ( In a fandom-wankery-lurking, not addressed to anyone actually on my flist way. )
Hokay. Now I will get on with the requisite Dear Yuletide Writing Person post...

You guys. At omonatheydidnt. The reason why these huge corporations feel like they can act like they own the world or lie blatantly to our faces is because when they spin things at you, you believe them, or you at least try to give them a fair chance, unstead of pretty much believing what a couple of guys with little to gain and everything to lose are telling you outright. Seriously. Have you people never seen a label/artist dispute before? The label will do anythng and everything it can to smear the artist who is pretty much just there trying to get paid for what they're doing. And that's all these guys are doing. And also, if all five have them had sued at once, it would have been a lot worse, because that would've made it easy for SM to just cut them all loose at once. Divided as they are is one of the reasons the company hasn't just dropped the hammer by now. Seriously, you people. Seriously. Trust me on this. Trust the artists. The label is never right, is never the good guy, and is never, ever, ever the wronged party, in any way. EVER. Jesus. I'm not even annoyed from a "I like DBSK" standpoint, I'm annoyed from a "I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU PEOPLE ARE SO OBTUSE ABOUT THIS AND THE CAUSES AND WHY WHAT'S BEING SAID BY THE COMPANY IS BULLSHIT" standpoint. Ugh. Please grow brains or at least put your obsessive love for Jaejoong's... Jaejoong to good use.
Anyway, um! I made a couple of posts the other day and totally disappeared and haven't replied to any number of awesome comments. See the day I made my posts I was tired and kind of strung out, so I thought I'd take a break and get to them tomorrow, which was yesterday. Well! Yesterday on the way home from work, the check engine light on graymary's car came on! While I was still half an hour from home! So that was fine. Then we spent several hours at Sears getting that taken care of (Cracked belt plus transmission flush) and ran a bunch of errands in between and finally got back around six, at which time I suggested a nap for both of us. (Em has some kind of sick thing.) So we napped for about an hour, then I woke up at sevenish, went into Em's room and said, "Let's just go to bed. Right now."
So we did. At 7:30 PM. So I've had about ten hours of sleep. I feel amazing. This was the best idea ever. But, uh, yeah, that's why I seem to be ignoring people. I've been asleep. For ten hours. Oops?

O useful Friends' FL. Here is a happy November poem
who are you, little i
(five or six years old) peering from some high
window; at the gold
of november sunset
(and feeling: that if day has to become night this is a beautiful way)
--e.e. cummings
And my own long-ago semi-haiku (there are pedantic arguments why 17 English syllables are much longer than 17 Japanese syllables, one being that by Japanese count November has 4 syllables, but I'll spare you them)
November sun. My neighbour's garden is back again
Yesterday back in TO amid the smell of dry fallen leaves and brilliant blue skies. 'Fall is the best time to do anything' someone said in a New York article long ago. Is true. ( Have some more; culled from following links )

Dear yuletide author,
Two main things:
1. By offering to write for any of these fandoms, you are already awesome. Thanks so much for doing so! Fic for any of these fandoms would make me really happy, so no pressure.
2. Remember that you are only constrained by the fandom and characters in my request. You can ignore my request details; you can certainly ignore this letter.
( That having been said: )
Again, many thanks, and I hope my requests haven't caused you too much grief!

Eh, wasn't going to public-post about this because I rarely do, and evey_w's already seen this stuff, which usually helps to get it out of my system, but I dunno. I need to distract myself from NaNo for a bit aha. Also, fyrna recently posted about doing things you normally wouldn't, so.
I am not the biggest DWJ fan. It's not that I can't appreciate her appeal, it's just that she has a tendency to irritate me on a personal level. Mostly this relates to story structure, and I find her endings particularly obnoxious. But I keep reading her because I usually do like her style and am especially fond of certain descriptive passages.
But that's not what I'm going to talk about here. ( I am going to point out race-related things that I find gross. )
I dunno, am I just more easily annoyed by these things since I happen to be re-reading The Jungle Book right now? But, I mean, that was published in 1894 (not that that excuses anything), while Conrad's Fate came out in 2005, and The Pinhoe Egg in 2006. So it's a little . . .

Oh, and because today is today--
Ask me no more, for fear I should reply; Others have held their tongues, and so can I; Hundreds have died, and told no tale before: Ask me no more, for fear I should reply --
How one was true and one was clean of stain And one was braver than the heavens are high, And one was fond of me: and all are slain. Ask me no more, for fear I should reply.
AE Housman

There's a fourth volume of Youmi Henjou Yawa.
It came out two and a half years ago.
Why was I not informed of this?
Have ordered along with the maddening vol.3. And because I'm acquainted with the infinitely treacherous ways of mangaka, I ordered a Hatsu Akiko with it. And because I'm still train lagged, didn't order the Hatsu Akiko I'd intended to. I mean, it's good, or looks good in its Chinese version, but it isn't the one with the Chinese stories. Dommage. There's still a fourth volume of Youmi Henjou and who knows what it might tell me.

The Night Revels of Minister Han Xizai was painted in the 10th century by Gu Hongzhong (another representation with linked closeups is here.) 'Painted in five panels' doesn't mean 'reproduced in five panels.' Good, that's cleared up.
Wandering about NY on Monday, trying to locate Kinokuniya while passing Saks 5th Avenue here or observing the mouth-watering sales on denki seihin there, I realized that many people come to NY to shop for, well, other things than I come to shop for, certainly. But these days, with cheap bk1 shipping and increasing numbers of- feh- translated manga not only at Kino but at Bookoff itself, I don't really come to buy manga anymore. (Though I'm sorry to have missed Kino while I had US money during loonie-daka-- Saiyuki Reload and Onmyouji and Ravages of Time would have been mine without waiting for shipping. OTOH I'd probably have bought a new Wordtank for heart-stopping prices, just for the ability to see what it looks like and does, and there goes my VISA. Sai Weng's horse and all.)
( No, what I really go to NY for is... )

Had a really fun weekend with flemmings, in spite of all things that conspired to ruin it, include NJ Transit/Amtrak, Piglet's sniffles, S's cold, and no babysitters. Saw a very in-depth exhibit of Qing dynasty painter Luo Ping at the Met, and Jung's Red Book at the Ruben, This is to say, flemmings and nojojojo saw it, while Piglet and I played hide and seek on Ruben's circular staircase.
On Sunday went to a fascinating performance of Night Banquest of Han Feizai(韩熙载夜宴图) by 汉唐乐府 (Han Tang Yue Fu), a Taiwanese group that is devoted to reviving and reconstructing an ancient style of music and dance that could be traced as far back as Tang dynasty.

I didn't think he did, but I have asshole friends who know I don't watch anything until days after it first airs. So crisis averted. I don't have to sell my concert tickets or stop watching Brendon Small's dumb little show.
That said, I was not terribly impressed with "RenovationKlok." I mean, don't get me wrong, I appreciate that the Dethklok empire would go to shit without CFO around. But among other things, I don't understand how the same Dethklok that was in "Bluesklok" could suddenly forget how to read a contract, no matter how convoluted.
Then again I am probably just cranky and therefore hatin' on everything. XD; Oh and also I have not gotten my 1667 words yet today. Aha. *gets to work on that*
* . . . re-reads the most recent Rope of Robots*

Tried a new restaurant this evening. It touted itself as Japanese AND Korean food! With my palate you cannot go wrong anywhere there. Turned out to be Korean owned and operated, which we found out with some investigation into the wall hangings and upon ordering from the Korean menu and being congratulated on making good choices by our waitress. (She liked that I asked for hwedupbap! I'd never even had it before! And it was awesome!) And then behind us were the most amazing people, who insisted on asking our completely American-accented waitress "where she was from" ("Um, I'm Korean, but I was born here in the states, so...") and then told her that her name didn't "sound very Korean" and insisted that she tell them her "real Korean name" and it was all pretty mortifying/enraging. "You're extremely patient," I told her quietly when she came back to our table, and she smiled the smile of death and muttered, "I have to be," before she freshened up my water. On the other hand, we found a good place to eat -- the owner makes his own gochujang, and it is delicious.
So this is my current doll-lust? She's basically perfect for someone on my "I want" list, and since Elfdoll is being stupid recently (and they're the ones who do, like, half of the other people I want) I am totally setting my sights on her. OH TIFFANY I WILL HAVE YOU
I'm sort of annoyed that 2PM is doing a comeback in the middle of all their drama, because I feel like they're going to start sweeping the shows and awards just because everyone is wanking about them lately, whether their song and performance are good or not, and I'm enjoying SHINee's winning streak and would also kind of like to see SS501 get a chance at things too, but hey. Who knows, maybe Hottest's incredibly stupid and hurtful boycotts will put a stop to it. I don't think I like that option, either. Whatever, JYP, you are inconvenient to me and my neeeeeds.
I've been at work so much this week members are asking me if I sleep there. "Yes," I say. "I have a little bedroll under my desk." I'm beginning to wonder if I should actually make that true.
